Minnesota Governor Tim Walls has been tapped as vice president Harris running mate.
Rick Klein
Everyone from Bernie Sanders to Joe Manchin is saying nice things about the guy.
Brad Milke
He remains a relative unknown to much of the country. So let's get acquainted. The man who shot former President Trump might not have been the only one out there.
Eric Gutersky
He had just spent some time in Iran.
Brad Milke
Turns out another man was arrested for what sources call an entirely separate plot. And naming your stadium after a company is so last decade.
Pitbull
We talking about Pitbull Stadium?
Brad Milke
What a rap stars contract tells us about the new era of corporate sponsorship.
From ABC News, this is start here. I'm Brad Milke.
Usually a vetting team for a presidential nominee spends months researching potential running mates, right? Evaluating risks and rewards. The team around Vice President Kamala Harris had 16 days. We've now learned that this weekend, after the list was narrowed down from twelve possible names to nine to three, she spoke to the finalists in person, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro and Minnesota governor Tim Walls. Throughout Washington, the thinking was that Shapiro might just be the front runner. He's a bit younger than Harris is. He's dynamite on the stump. So if you're trying to capitalize on this groundswell of support from young Democrats and their brat summer, this would be the guy. But sources familiar with the interviews say that when he spoke to Harris in person, his team at least did not think it went that great. On Sunday, sources say he called Harris to say he wasn't sure he should leave his job as Pennsylvania governor. Well, by Monday, Harris had made up her mind. And on Tuesday morning, she called her top choice.
Heidi Heitkamp
It's Kamala Harris. Good morning, governor.
Tim Walz
Good morning, Madam vice president.
Brad Milke
Her campaign released video of each side of this call, Harris wearing a suit and her new running mate wearing a t shirt and a camo hat. This was much of America's first introduction to Tim Walls. By last night, they were on a stage together in Philadelphia.
Heidi Heitkamp
Welcome the next vice president of the United States, Tim Wall.
Brad Milke
So very fast moving. And if all this left you frantically googling, who is Tim Walls? You weren't alone. Like I said, not a ton of name recognition, a different direction from somebody like Shapiro. But this pic carries its own very distinct message. So let's break it down today. We got a mini roundtable assembled to talk about this pic. Let's bring in former democratic senator from North Dakota, Heidi Heitkamp and ABC's own Washington bureau chief, Rick Klein. Rick, let's start with you.
Who is this guy?
Rick Klein
Well, he's only 60 years old. He may look a little bit older, but relatively young, only six months or so older than Kamala Harris. And what a biography. I mean, a Democrat from Minnesota, as we know, but he spent some 20 years as a schoolteacher teaching social studies, overseeing a lunchroom where he says he actually, that's where he lost his hair and serving in the National National Guard, helped put himself through college and pay his bills. And then running for Congress, taking over a seat that was on the redder side. It was kind of a reach for democrats, a redder part of Minnesota, able to keep it in democratic hands for more than ten years and then ran for governor and won reelection.
Tim Walz
Minnesotans have made it clear they chose the hopeful future of one Minnesota, where we invest in our children, where we defend the rights of individuals, where we address climate change and is able to.
Rick Klein
Govern as a progressive, but someone with some real blue collar appeal, a kind of prairie populist type who is impressed. A lot of people on the cable television rounds, fascists depend on us going.
Tim Walz
Back, but we're not afraid of weird people.
We're a little bit creeped out, but we're not afraid.
Rick Klein
You've heard JD Vance called weird in the last couple of days or weeks. That has a lot to do with the soundbite that he coined, which put him on everyone's radar screen. And ultimately he gelled with Vice President Harris, which is probably the most important quality at the end, beyond any of the biography.
Brad Milke
Yeah. And Senator Heidi Heitkamp, you know something about prairie progressives from North Dakota. What do you think about this pick? Do you like it?
Heidi Heitkamp
Well, I think it's, I think it's great. I don't think she had a bad choice. I think she could have picked any one of the people that she was considering, and people in the democratic party would have been thrilled. But for those of us in the midwest, who have been jumping up and down saying, pay attention to us. Pay attention to rural America. You know, let's find people who know, who have lived our experience, who can bring our experience to the White House. This was an awesome pick.
Brad Milke
And I don't know. I mean, I don't know what you know about the inner workings of the Harris campaign, but can you surmise as to why she ended up going with him and not some of these other names we've been hearing about?
Heidi Heitkamp
I think at the end of the day, it's about chemistry. It's about who you think Will, will bring a different dynamic and good counsel to the table. People always think when you're talking about diversity, it's more people of color, more people of gender. But diversity is really about different ideas, different lived experiences coming into the decision making place. He could not have a different life experience than what she's had.
Tim Walz
I lived in Butte, a small town of 400, where community was a way of life growing up. I spent the summers working on the family farm.
Heidi Heitkamp
His experience is authentic. It's real. He's authentic. He's real. And people will look at him and say, I know him. I had a high school teacher just like him. I had a high school football coach just like him. I know that he can walk in and actually run a tractor.
Tim Walz
Well, hey, Minnesotans. Governor walls here on this beautiful late summer day down here on the Vermilion river, just 30 minutes from the metro area, and I got to spend a morning out here with my daughter fly fishing in beautiful Minnesota.
Heidi Heitkamp
He knows how to get in a fishing boat and catch a walleye. And, you know, if you're going to have somebody in a duck blind with you shooting ducks in the morning, he's a pretty good choice.
Brad Milke
Yeah, Rick, to that point. And you mentioned the age thing. Apparently. Allegedly, they're about the same age. Right? Harris is 59. He's 60. He's giving off the major grandpa vibes, though, especially compared to, like, Josh Shapiro or Andy Bashir, some of these other shortlisters. Is that a conscious, I guess. What voters does walls appeal to from your 30,000 foot view?
Rick Klein
Well, I think. I think the grandpa vibes might help. If you are a barrier breaker like Vice President Harris, the first woman of color to ever top a ticket, maybe you want to go with someone who kind of looks the part. There's been a couple of democratic vice presidents over the last half century from Minnesota, as Heidi Heitkamp knows. Well, it worked for Walter Mondale, it worked for Hubert Humphrey. And, you know, he's kind of an heir to that part of the democratic party. And I think the geography does matter now. Minnesota is not a battleground state. At least democrats hope not. If they lose Minnesota, they lose the election, period, full stop. But he lives pretty close to a couple of critical battleground states, and he lives a life and represents a lot of constituents that, that are a lot like people in Wisconsin, in Michigan, in Pennsylvania. There are big swaths of that state that very much resemble demographically, culturally, economically, large swaths of Minnesota.
Tim Walz
Clean water in their communities, public safety in their communities, safe roads and bridges in their community. Those are the things that make Minnesota work.
Rick Klein
And it's not like he was able to win all of them. Still a closely divided state, or that will happen now. But if you are a voter in those states and you're seeing a lot and hearing a lot about governor walls in the coming weeks and months, maybe you do think, like Senator Heitkamp says, this is someone that's understands me and certainly understands me or looks and sounds more like me than a Democrat who grew up in San Francisco, in the Bay Area politics that Vice President Harris did. So in terms of balancing the ticket of that way, there's some real potential geographic appeal. Not far from the borders of the state that he now represents and now.
Brad Milke
Leads is the bigger challenge right now for the Harris campaign. The now Harris Walls campaign is the bigger challenge.
Drawing in people from the left who maybe were, like, disillusioned with Joe Biden, like, getting them out to the polls. They're not gonna vote for Trump, but you need them at the polls. Or is it about getting sort of those centrist voters like you're describing, the dad that sort of switched over to Fox News and voting for Trump the last few years? Is that the bigger challenge? What is the goal now and the messaging from this ticket?
Heidi Heitkamp
I think that what you saw post debate, post President Biden's debate, was a really demoralized base, not because they didn't like Joe Biden, but they were despondent about how do we convince people to go to the polls and vote for someone who did not demonstrate that maybe he would make it the next four years?
And so I think there was a kind of depression with Kamala Harris. That base got energized, and when we fight, we win.
It has exploded. You can't raise the kind of money that she's raised in the last two weeks. You can't get the number of volunteers that she's gotten without sensing a base enthusiasm. If she energizes rural Democrats or rural independents to go out and vote once again in Michigan and Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. That's huge. And so I sound like a broken record. I just believe that the Democratic Party cannot be successful without turning around some of the fortune that we have in rural America. Are we going to win it? No, we're not going to win it. Do we need to lose it less badly than what we've been losing it? The answer is absolutely yes. And Tim Waltz is exactly the kind of messenger to that base that can help turn that around.
Rick Klein
And Brad, I think the answer to your question is both. In a way, a vote in downtown Milwaukee counts the same as a vote in the outskirts of Eau Claire, where this ticket is going to be spending part of its day today. And one of the things about Governor Walz that we've seen early on, everyone from Bernie Sanders to Joe Manchin is saying nice things about the guy. That's a really hard thing to do in the Democratic Party right now. And I think part of Vice President Harris's and the Harris Walls tickets challenge is to keep that unity together, to not lose that, because Senator high camp is right. I mean, this party was divided in all these different ways up until the moment that President Biden stepped aside. Vice President Harris has been the beneficiary of some of that goodwill, but now she has to keep it.
Tim Walz
When vice president and I talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make your own health care decisions.
Rick Klein
That's on Tim walls. It's on Vice President Harris, and it's on this ticket. And Democrats across the country in making the case, because they need to do both. They have to keep their energized core base, younger, more diverse base of voters. And yes, they have to not get absolutely wiped out in redder parts of the country.
Brad Milke
People are going to start looking for policy differences between that. Is there any daylight, Rick, that you've surmised looking at walls has passed as far as policy and everything? Like are they aligned politically on all the issues, or are there policy bits that are going to start sneaking up on walls in the Harris campaign?
Rick Klein
Well, they're closer than you might think, but because they come from different parts of the country, some of their politics are animated a little bit differently, very strong union ties that both of them have. But I think it's particularly pronounced with, with governor Walls as a function of where he was a governor. He's pushed some policies, frankly, that are more progressive than anything that the Biden Harris team has been pushing for on paid family leave, for instance. But look, he pushed to codify Roe v. Wade protections. That's something that Vice President Harris is a huge fan of as well. You're going to see a lot of talk about how governor Walls handled the George Floyd protests. Of course, those happened in Minnesota on his watch. He's acknowledged shortcomings on that. And that's an area where Vice President Harris may have some vulnerability as well. But it is, it is remarkable to see in this 1st 24 hours or so of walls rollout to recognize how he's been able to govern like a progressive but come across as a moderate.
Tim Walz
By the way, as you heard, I was one of the best shots in Congress. But in Minnesota, we believe in the second amendment, but we also believe in common sense gun violence laws.
Rick Klein
And the fact that he has made little videos from his backseat talking about how he bought a $5 part to fix his own car.
Tim Walz
Just clip off the back, use some shrink wrap connectors on there, tape it back together and put it back in. It's about a five minute fix, and you're back on the road.
Rick Klein
The fact that he's posed for photos of himself on hunting trips, that does go a long way. Even though you're going to hear a lot of Republicans saying, look, it's phony that this is the most liberal ticket in american history.
Heidi Heitkamp
Well, I mean, there's nothing phony about a guy who actually goes and hunts and fishes. And I mean, you may say, well, I don't agree with his politics, but you know, who he is. And the one factor here that we haven't talked about that I think is, is so important in politics is you gotta look like you're having fun. And right now, Donald Trump's the Krabby campaign.
Every time they get out there, they're growling. They're snarling.
And, you know, waltz comes from that great tradition of the happy warrior.
Tim Walz
Thank you, Madam Vice president, for the trust you put in me, but maybe more so.
Thank you for bringing back the joy.
Heidi Heitkamp
Look, you know, we think we got problems. We can fix them. Let's work together. That's what I've done. And do it with a smile. And I think, I think, you know, if you're gonna join the crabby team, you know, I'd rather join the happy team, the team that looks like they're winning.
Brad Milke
And again, this is the change that you're talking about. From just a few weeks ago to now, a lot of Democrats were saying, yeah, I'll vote for Biden, but I'm not the happiest about it. And here we go, former senator Heidi Heitkamp from North Dakota, ABC's Washington bureau chief Rick Klein. Thank you both.
Heidi Heitkamp
You bet.
Rick Klein
Thanks, Brad.
Brad Milke

Heidi Heitkamp
Now.
Brad Milke
As the Harris campaign comes together historically, quickly remember this Trump campaign will go down in history as well. After all, he survived an assassination attempt.
Tim Walz
As you already know, the assassin's bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life.
Brad Milke
We know who tried to kill Donald Trump. Thomas Matthew Crooks was 20 years old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, and appeared to research upcoming appearances by both Trump and Joe Biden before he brought his ar 15 style weapon to a Trump rally, acting as a lone wolf up on a rooftop.
Tim Walz
People make threats to the president and the people we protect every day. We need to have that domestic and international network of field offices to be able to track down those threats.
Brad Milke
Well, what if I told you around that same time, another would be assassin from overseas was honing a plot to kill Trump as well? Well, now sources are telling us that is exactly what federal agents believe was happening. ABC senior investigative correspondent Eric Gutersky is with us. Aaron, wait, so there was just like a whole other assassination plan?
Eric Gutersky
Allegedly. There was bread, and it was supposed to be carried out by a pakistani man named Merchant, who is now under arrest.
And he's been in us custody for the better part of a month, it turns out. And, Brad, the authorities say that he wanted to assassinate any number of us government officials from both parties and one of them, according to sources telling ABC News, that includes former President Trump.
Brad Milke
What would have been the alleged plan here, like his law enforcement revealed what they think was actually happening behind the scenes.
Eric Gutersky
They have. Brad, the detail is rather incredible. According to the criminal complaint, a Sif merchant arrives from Pakistan in April of 2024, lands in Houston, Texas, and he had just spent some time in Iran. The authorities say that while he was in Houston, he wanted to try and contact hitmen that could carry out this alleged plot to assassinate government officials, including Trump, and ended up contacting someone that he wanted to come meet in New York. This person, it turns out, must have gotten spooked because the person that merchant contacted, according to prosecutors, ended up tipping off the FBI.
Brad Milke
Wow.
Eric Gutersky
Which then started following a seaf merchant from Texas to New York and in other parts of the country as he tried to assemble this team to carry out his desires. And Brad, according to the criminal complaint, Asif merchant ended up using code words to. To talk about this assassination plot. They found a piece of paper with a bunch of words. When they did a search of where he was staying in Texas, he ended up plotting out the assassination on the back of a napkin. And authorities included pictures of that napkin in the criminal complaint. By the time he was arrested, no specific target had been named or decided upon. But he was about to leave the country, the authorities said. And that's when the arrest occurred on July 12. So, Brad, that would be just one day before the actual assassination attempt on Trump's life in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Brad Milke
Unbelievable. And so then, if allegedly, he's contacting basically what he thinks are american hitmen, like, he's kind of outsourcing this or insourcing this. I guess my question is, would this have been the work of a foreign government?
Heidi Heitkamp
Aaron?
Brad Milke
Like, was this one guy off on his own, or was he being sent by the Pakistanis or the Iranians?
Eric Gutersky
The court documents don't make it clear, but they go out of their way to say that merchant had spent time in Iran very recently before he ended up flying from Pakistan to New York. So they imply a connection. And broadly, we know that us officials have known for some time that Iran has threatened to assassinate Trump and other us government officials ever since the Americans killed top iranian general Soleimani.
And that's part of the reason that the security posture at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, was adjusted at the last minute to account for this ever evolving threat picture that happens to involve Trump. This arrest may help explain why they made the adjustments they did.
Brad Milke
Really wild stuff here, considering obviously so many failures when it came to the domestic plot against Trump. But this one from this foreign national, if true, is absolutely bizarre. All right, Aaron Katersky in New York. Thank you.
Eric Gutersky
Thank you, Brett.
Brad Milke
Okay, one more quick break. When we come back, some schools say ra ra. Some say we're number one. Well, the new chant in Florida is gonna be Dale. One last thing is next.
This year, Dell Technologies back to school event is delivering impressive tech with an inspiring purpose. Help Dell make a difference, and shop AI ready PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors@dell.com.
that's dell.com deals.
And one last thing.
Lots of colleges have buildings that are named after people, but often those people are dead philanthropists, not international recording superstars who are very much alive.
Pitbull
Me not working hard. Yeah, right. Picture that with a Kodak pitbull.
Brad Milke
Yes. The rapper and musician behind gems like give me everything and I know you want me is a native of Miami, Florida.
Pitbull
It's Mister 305. Better said, mister worldwide. Checking in, checking out. Have a blessed day, darling.
Brad Milke
He is the city. The city is he. And yesterday, Florida International University, which is based in Miami, announced that Mister Worldwide himself has purchased the naming rights for FIU's football stadium.
Pitbull
We talking about Pitbull Stadium?
Brad Milke
And on its face, this did not seem like your average corporate sponsorship deal. As part of this, he's supposed to appear at fundraising events, post about the school on social media, and even write the school's new anthem. I wonder if it'll sound something like his song, the anthem.
Pitbull
Everybody knows this right here.
Brad Milke
But in other ways, this is very much the new face of corporate sponsorship.
Heidi Heitkamp
I never even thought that Flavor Flav.
Brad Milke
And water polo would go together. We talked just last week about how Flavor Flav is personally sponsoring the US Olympic water polo team. Ryan Reynolds, the actor, bought a british soccer club. Heck, Pitbull already owns a NASCAR team of his own. A lot of entertainers have become part of the multimillionaire class, and they're acting like it.
Pitbull
I didn't graduate from FIU.
I graduated from high school, to be honest with you. But music was my escape, and it allowed me to invest into education and give kids an opportunity.
Brad Milke
So, as part of this deal, Pitbull will pay $1.5 million a year for the next five years to have the stadium named after him. It's got an option to re up for another five. So you could be looking at a decade of Pitbull Stadium. Its serious money for the school, and it comes with serious business considerations. For Pitbull, for example, the vodka company he owns will now be the preferred drink inside the stadium. Ten days a year, he will get to use the stadium for his own concerts rather than renting it out to other venues. He says none of that matters to him as much as representing Miami.
Pitbull
Well, we do it because I'm from the crib. I'm 305. I'm from the bottom. This is my backyard. And when I say Miami, it's ours.
Brad Milke
But he also predicted this is not the last naming rights deal to feature a prominent celebrity.
Pitbull
This is history in the making. You're gonna see that every other university is gonna want to do the same thing. But the difference is, we don't do this for propaganda. We do it from the heart.
Brad Milke
After all, it's no longer just enough to be an entertainer. That's how you get rich, sure, but not super rich. The way you join the Gwyneth Paltrows and Kim Kardashians is to invest in an empire, and empires get their names on buildings. Pitbull's signature phrase, Dale, literally means give it because he's ready to take whatever's on offer.
By the way, I'm shocked to hear there was no talk about changing the mascot. Like currently FIU has the Panthers. What about the FIU pit bulls? Like if I'm on the other team, I'm starstruck the moment I'm entering the stadium. More reaction to the selection of Tim Walls as Kamala Harris running mate. That'll be up all day on ABC News live.
