Hello, sunshine. I'm Alexi Lawless, and welcome to the State of the Union podcast, where we look at the beautiful game on and off the field through the lens of red, white and blue colored glasses. Today's show is brought to you by Zillow agents tours loans homes get home with zillow. We are coming to you live. Monday, June 17, sorry, 18th, following our fifth day of.

Oh, my God, it's Tuesday, right? So it's Tuesday. I am just in, in a fog right now. Tuesday, June 18, on our fifth day of 2020. €4.

As we continue on into this amazing summer of soccer, a reminder, we will be coming to you live after each and every euro action and cope America action, which kicks off this week. We'll give you a wrap up and a preview of what's to come. But first, joining me as always, my friend, my colleague, my guiding lights, David Mossy, a soccer savant and a fox soccer researcher and writer extraordinaire. Mossy, how are you doing on this? Yes, Tuesday, June 18, doing well.

David Mossy
You sound a little burnt out. And we haven't even started our second tournament yet. We did rehearse for the Copa America today, and let me just say that Juan Pablo angel, what a good looking guy. I think it's going to be a recurring theme that I will be mentioning how good looking he is. And this is nothing new.

Alexi Lawless
And for people that don't know, part of our cast from Copa America is Juan Paulo angel, former New York metro star, former Columbia International, all that kind of stuff. And as you said, one of the best looking guys that I've ever worked with on television, I don't mind saying it. And you will, you will be subjected in the, in the most positive way to his glorious handsomeness very, very soon. But yes, we were rehearsing. Our good friend Carly Lloyd was there.

She looks wonderful. She is due, as we know, later on in the fall with her first baby. She looks incredible, radiant, all the different things. And she's ready to bring it for Copa America. Rob Stone was, was there.

And of course, and of course, Clint Dempsey, Deuce was there, too. So the whole cast of characters were rehearsing. We can do a, have you watched anything today? Wait, what's going on? What happened?

David Mossy
Yeah, last night I watched the first episode of the second season of House of the Dragon, and that's the Game of Thrones spin off. And I liked it. I'm excited for this season. Also, my father wanted me to tell you that he watched the documentary on Gene Wilder and liked it as well. There we go.

Alexi Lawless
Actually, I was on a podcast this morning doing some promotion, and at the end of it, just randomly, they said, you know, what are you watching? What are you listening to? And all that kind of stuff. And so I had a whole list to give them, including the Gene Wilder documentary that we talked about yesterday. All right, should we like the scandal, my friend?

David Mossy
Let's do it. Where should we start? All right. We had two games today at the euros, both in group f. We'll go in reverse order.

The second game of the day took place in Leipzig. Portugal came from behind for a two one win over Czechia in dramatic fashion. Czechia took the lead in the second half, and then minutes later, an own goal leveled matters. Portugal thought they had taken lead through Diogo Jota, but that was chalked off for Ronaldo. Offsides in the buildup.

But then another substitute, Francisco conseason, did get the winner. So Portugal, one of the favorites to win the tournament, come away with all three points. Okay, so, first things first. The intrigue, if you will, about Cristiano Ronaldo and whether he was going to start was put to rest when the lineups came out. I don't think it's necessary.

Alexi Lawless
A surprise. We had. You know, we heard Peter Schmeichel talk about how he thought that if Roberto Martinez was going to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to the Euros, you bring him, then you better start him. And that's exactly what happened before we get into the. The game, because Cristiano Ronaldo, because of who he is, is as big a story as anything in terms of the result.

Portugal winning is not a surprise to anybody. How do you think that Cristiano played? Because I thought that if you did not know this was Cristiano Ronaldo, it's not that he had a bad game, but it wasn't a superstar type of performance. He had some looks at goal, some headers and some different things, and obviously, was involved in the final buildup and the final goal, hitting it or the goal that was ultimately called back. So what grade do you think that Cristiano gets for this performance today?

David Mossy
I can't believe he didn't score that. By the way, the sequence that resulted in the Jota goal that ended up getting chalked off was a point blank header that you expect Ronaldo to put away, and he headed it off the post and then Jota put in the rebound. I don't think he was that great overall. The debate about whether he was going to start or not was resolved when the team sheet came out. But the debate about whether he should start lives on.

I was talking to our buddy Danny Terrace before we started taping, and he feels, and I know a lot of people agree, that we talk about Portugal being such a talented team, but as long as Ronaldo is there, it inhibits the other players from fully asserting themselves. And so there still is this question, the risk reward of starting Cristiano Ronaldo. I know he got a lot of goals in qualifying, but they were against minnows. And at the highest level, is he a player, a guy who now plays in Saudi Arabia, who's 39 years old, who can make the difference for them? So I think that debate rages on.

Alexi Lawless
I'm torn because I think he was certainly passable, and even more so, it was interesting, somebody was asking me earlier about how he's changed. Well, there's the normal way that anybody changes as they get older, especially someone like him, that relied on his speed and his quickness out wide. And he will readily admit that that's not where he shows up anymore, because he can't do what he once did out wide. But I thought that, again, he was good. He was not great.

And it's not unfair to expect greatness, especially when we put it in the context of this, compare and contrast with Messi, because when Messi steps on the field, we not only expect greatness, but more often than not, we get it. And I know that I have. What do the kids say if Stan, for whatever I've stood, what's the past of Stan? I stand. Stood.

I don't know. Because. No, because it's referencing a name. Anyway, I have often come down on the side of Cristiano Ronaldo, and I will continue to fight that battle and have that debate. But if he is stepping on the field and not providing magic relative to Messi, then it gets into an interesting type of debate.

But ultimately, they got the result. Now, Portugal is a lot of people's pick, including Peter Schmeichel, including Ari hingst, along with others. But in terms of being, if they could only pick one, they're picking Portugal here. I have Portugal, obviously, in my top ten here, but nothing that they did today. And this doesn't.

This applies to other teams, like England and others, but nothing that they did today made me sit up and say, oh, I was wrong. This should be the number one team. A couple of notes. Ronaldo, by stepping on the field today, became the first player ever to feature in six different euros he's scored in the previous five. We'll see if he can get one in this tournament.

David Mossy
And Portugal really flexed their depth today, as I mentioned. Jota, who was a sub, came on and scored what we thought was the go ahead goal. It got chalked off for offsides and then three other subs combined on what ended up being the winner. Gonzalo Inaccio, a very good young player they brought on at the back, lofted a pass to Pedro Neto down the left wing. He beat his defender, the cross comes in, and then Francisco Conseil ends up putting it away.

Netto and consequent had just come on. They didn't even play Joel Felix and Gonzalo Ramos, so their depth is ridiculous. Roberto Martinez has so many options to choose him. And nice note on Francisco. Father Sergio Con session scored a hat trick at the euros 24 years ago, almost to the day.

It was June 20, 2000, against Germany. And his son Francisco conseason gets the winner, his first international goal, June 18, 2024 at the euros. Well, you saw how much it meant to him. You saw how much it meant to Portugal, and there certainly was a sense of relief. And, you know, when Cristiano Ronaldo is playing, the camera is always on him.

Alexi Lawless
It was interesting to see the dynamic with him on the field. As you mentioned earlier, what people are saying might not necessarily be what they ultimately think in terms of what's best for Portugal, but they certainly say it in public. But him going around to each and every player and hugging each and every player, and after the national anthem, at least doing the things visibly that you want a leader to do. And we should mention the Czechia goal was a beauty by Pravad from long distance. And I know the stats on goals from outside the box.

David Mossy
I know you posted one on x today. Yeah. What was it? I forgot what it was because now we've gone to 33 goals, I think, and over 30% of them are coming from outside the box. I think we're up to, like twelve or 13 from the outside the box.

Alexi Lawless
And, you know, why is this important? Well, you know, it could just be an anomaly, but shooting from long distance is an art. It is a skill. It has gotten more difficult as time has gone on, as the goalkeepers have gotten better and the defense have become smarter. But these kind of pullbacks to the top of the box that we have seen now countless times, it's pretty interesting, and I don't know if it's something that's happening when it comes to training for everybody out there, but it's a nice type of thing to happen.

We were already ahead of where we were at this time. In terms of goal scores from the. Last tournament, it's 34 goals in twelve games, three own goals, and then the other 31 have been scored by 31 different scores. So right now there's a 31 way tie for the golden boot race. Right.

Ungol's got a. Got a hat trick over there. All right. Anything else on. On this game?

David Mossy
No, I'm ready to move on. It is Czechia, right? Czechia. Maybe somebody should tell ESPN. Okay, go on.

Alexi Lawless
Let's go on. I don't know. I saw them tweeting that the Czech Republic had just. Well, that's their old name. I guess they're not respecting the name change.

Well, okay. That's how. That's how they want to roll. That's fine. But we here are respecting a rebrand, and this is a rebrand to Czechia.

David Mossy
Incidentally, I pushed very hard on the pre game show for us to show the Carol Poborsky goal that he scored for the Czech Republic against Portugal in the quarterfinals of the €96 at Villa park. It's one of the most famous goals in Euro's history. I could not get that in. Our producer, Zach Kinman said, no, not enough time. We got too much else going on.

So that was a disappointment for me. Can't win every battle, my friend. But I appreciate that you're fighting the. Good fight, but let's go to the other group. F game, which aired on Kylo's favorite network, Fubo Turkey claimed a three one win over Georgia in Dortmund.

They took the lead through Mulder. Then Georgia came right back and equalized in the second half out of the goulet with a sensational strike. An early candidate for goal of the tournament made it two on Turkier and then Akhtur Koglu with an empty net. It was almost like a hockey goal when one of the teams pulls their goalie to seal matters. So Turkier, who I've talked up as a potential dark horse, off to a good start.

Alexi Lawless
Yeah, they brought it. And this was an entertaining game for those that were able to watch it. And it was a. You know, we talked and you've talked about Turkey in terms of how good they are, also kind of being a home team. And it was.

It was a raucous, festive atmosphere. It should. Should be said that from a weather perspective, today was not a good day for Germany, but they still got the games played. Plenty of rain throughout both of those. Both of those games.

There was even talk at some point of possibly having to postpone or at least hold off games in order to deal with the rain. But the Germans over there, their stadiums are equipped to be able to deal with rain. I don't think it affected the game that much, but this was a fun game back and forth. And even though ultimately Turkey a wins, I thought Georgia put up a really good fight and had a good account of themselves and ultimately produced, like we said, one of the most entertaining games that we've seen so far in this tournament. I agree with you.

David Mossy
I mentioned that I've talked up Turkiye as a potential dark horse. I've also talked up Arter Goulaire as a potential breakout player. He became the first teenager to score on his euro's debut since Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2004. And this is what I saw with Real Madrid late in the season. He does have a magical left foot, so I thought if he got on the field in this tournament, he could do some pretty special things.

And we saw it. And when he turned inside to go on that magical left foot, you know, when you're watching it on television, television, it's easy, obviously, sitting on your couch or wherever you're watching and to say, all right, we're going to hit that left foot over there. It's a little different in practice. And yet he did exactly as if it was a video game, what you were controlling him to do, and he smacked it. He knew, as anybody does, as soon as he hit it where it was going and he knew it was it.

And again, a big part of me talking up Turkey is the massive turkish population in Germany, the support they were going to have. And we saw that today. That stadium was all turkish. It was. It was rocking.

Alexi Lawless
Again, there are multiple home teams when it comes to this tournament. We'll see. We'll talk about Germany here in a second. Anything else on this particular game, how did it go from a productions perspective, behind the scenes, how was it going? Very well.

Okay. Yeah. Today was Rob Stone's first day of the summer. It's been Jules breach up to now. We gave her a day off.

David Mossy
Rob came in and I thought, acquitted. Himself well, he's Rob Stone, he's a pro, you know, he figures it out. All right, should we look to tomorrow? Yes. So we've got three games on tap tomorrow.

First up in Group B, Croatia coming off that disappointing 30 loss of Spain in their opener. We'll try to get back on track. They face Albania in Hamburg. Albania lost their opener to Italy. We'll see if Luca Modric and company can get a victory here.

Alexi Lawless
I think we had said when Croatia played their first game that they're not as bad as the score reflects with some more days having passed. Do you believe that? And do you believe against an Albania team they get back in terms of the winning ways and what we kind of have expected from Croatia, or are you still concerned after that first game? I think they are a bit long in the tooth. I don't see them making too deep a run in this tournament, but I do think they get out of the group stage and they get a victory here.

All right, so that's at 09:00 a.m. eastern time on fs one. Correct. Another game on fs one. In Group A, the host, Germany will face Hungary in Stuttgart, Germany looking to pick up where they left off after that incredible open against Scotland, which they won five one.

If Germany wins this game, does that mean Hungary's out? I know we have third place teams and have you done any of the calculations? Yeah, I won't get into it in too much detail, but Germany and Switzerland can advance tomorrow. Germany and Switzerland can advance tomorrow. All right, well, look, when Germany came right out of the chute and just completely annihilated Scotland, they shot to the top of my power rankings.

And Germany as a country, I think, has really already embraced this team for things that they think that they can do, and I don't think that they should have any problem when it comes to Hungary. So that's at noon eastern time on fs one. I'm curious to see if Nagelsman rolls out the same lineup. He's a bit of a mad scientist, so he might want to rotate and get different players in there. Your Thomas Mueller Lerosanes, or will he stick with the eleven that played so well against Scotland?

We will have Ari Hingst as one of our guests tomorrow for our show, so she will be able to wrap up what, from her perspective, I would think is hopefully a win. But ultimately, if you've never had a chance to hear or interact with Ari Hinks, well, if you do, from a personal perspective, do it because she's a phenomenal person. She's incredibly smart, she's also incredibly funny. And so we're looking forward to having her up here. And as a matter of fact, she has come to me multiple times in the, in the days that we have started working here and said, well, so when say to you what's going on?

So she's excited about it. You mentioned Clint Dempsey was in today for Copa rehearsal. I spoke to him brought up the pod. He's excited to do it. Yeah.

He came over to me and said, oh, mossy's complaining, you know, because we're. We were doing some rehearsing and we was holding you up and you have a lot of work to do, so we're going to get you out of here as quickly as possible. All right, so, like we said, that's at noon. Germany hungry. Noon on fs one.

David Mossy
Yes. And then the third game of the day and the second from Group A is Scotland. Switzerland in Cologne, Scotland, looking to bounce back from that disastrous opener against Germany. Whether they win or lose, I'm sure the fans will be fired up about it. A lot of great shots of scottish fans, which I know you're a big fan of.

Alexi Lawless
Yeah. I mean, so Scotland has another chance to prove that they are more than just memes, that they are more than just people running around in kilts, that they are more than just people drinking beer, and that they actually can play a decent game of soccer. So we'll see if they're able to. Able to do that. And you said Switzerland can go through with a win.

David Mossy
Yes. Remember, they beat hungry in their opener, so they're looking to make it two wins out of two. All right, so that is 03:00 p.m. eastern time on Big Fox. Bart Simpson Fox.

Very quickly, before we get to the Mbappe news, we had two goals chalked off today for marginal offsides, yieldees, and the turkey Georgia game. I was sitting next to Chilini when that goal was scored in the production room, and he was very excited because Ulysses is a Juventus player, and so he was very upset when it got chalked off for, you know, it was like a toe being offsides. And then we mentioned the Giotto goal, chalked off because Ronaldo was slightly offside. Shoulder might have been a bit ahead of the last defender. Those decisions continue to annoy people, but you don't have a problem with it.

Alexi Lawless
So I don't know what marginally offsides means. I mean, as we said time and time again, you can't be a little pregnant. All right, Carly Lloyd's pregnant. All right? She's not marginally pregnant.

All right? So if it's offside, it's offside, and that we have the technology in the VAR to show that it's offside, that it's a little or a lot really doesn't matter. It doesn't change what the consequences are. So if. Yeah, I don't understand what the argument is here.

All right? I don't get it. What are we arguing here? People think it goes against the spirit of the rule that if it's really close, the tie essentially should go to the attacking player. But that's not the.

Try not to swear here. I know we're live here. That's not the law. Okay, if you want to redo the law, then redo the law and say, you know what, we're just going to go by feel, eh, if it felt offside, then it's, then it's offside. And if not, okay, and if we really like you, maybe it's offside.

But if we don't really like you. I mean, here's my rule. If a goal makes Giorgio Kelini happy, it should stand. There we go. All right, well, maybe we can, we can, we can agree on that.

All right, Mister Mbappe, what's the deal? Big news item. We talked about how in France's opener against Austria, he injured his nose. It appeared to be broken. A confirmation today that it in fact is broken.

David Mossy
And he's definitely going to miss their next group game against the Netherlands, which is a shame. That's one of the big group games we had been really hyping up. And then we'll see after that they end up the group stage against Poland. We'll see if he can make it back for that. Whenever he makes it back, he's going to be wearing a mask for the rest of the tournament.

We'll see how that affects him. Again, Georgia Keelini talked about today how he had to wear a mask a lot. He broke his nose several times throughout his career and he'd say it does affect some your peripheral vision and a little bit your ability to detect everything that's going on around you. So mention to see how that goes. But I don't, and I am not a doctor, I readily admit, not that anybody thinks that I am, but are those extra three days really going to change anything?

Alexi Lawless
Somebody actually was suggesting at one point in the degree room, is this a function of they have to get the mask and they have to figure it out? I wouldn't think so. I think if a mask is in play, they can get that very expedited and quickly. And certainly before that next game, it does bring up a question in terms of the yellow card that he is on, wouldn't it be strategically smart for him to step on the field, get a yellow card and then step off the field and to burn a substitution so that he has the two and then he misses the third game? It's not crazy but I don't know.

David Mossy
I don't see them doing that. All right, all right. Listen, the laws are the laws. All right. Okay.

Alexi Lawless
Well, I hope that he's okay. I hope that we see him again in this tournament, masked or unmasked, because he's still one of the great players. But to your point, and we showed Colini in his different masks over the years, but he'll be the first person to tell you that it does affect your sleeping, it does affect the vision that you have. So we'll see what an Mbappe looks like if, when he gets back on the field, like I said, with or without a mask and how much of an Mbappe he is or isn't going forward. So it's a pity, but I guess it could have been worse.

Should we finish this up, Mossy? Let's do it. All right. My one for the road, for those that, that weren't around or don't remember, way back in the 19 hundreds, way back in the previous century, yours truly was running around on the soccer field, and I had the incredible privilege and pleasure of playing for the United States. We hosted a World cup back in 1994.

Mossy, I don't know if you heard about this. Men's World cup back in 1994 changed my life forever. I do think it changed the trajectory of soccer forever in the United States, as did the 1999 Women's World cup. But woke up this morning and I was at my computer and I started looking at different things in the time, and somebody sent me something that said, did you know it's 30 years today from the moment that you stepped on the field? And it almost was literally to the minute, because back in 1994, the US played their first game in that World cup against Switzerland.

The game was played about 15 minutes away from where I grew up in Michigan in the old rest in peace, Pontiac Silverdome. And it was the kickoff time was designed to benefit Europe. And so we actually kicked off at around 11:30 a.m. and so at I'm here on the west coast in Los Angeles at 08:00 in the morning, I said, you know what? 30 years ago, I was walking on the field, and I remember that I had a picture.

And so I posted this picture of us walking out onto the silver dome field. And as I said, for anybody, that moment would be big, certainly for someone who grew up in Michigan. And like I said, just right down the road from where I grew up, I had friends and family in the stands. Now, this was the first indoor World cup game played. And while it was indoor, it was not climate controlled in that there was no AC or whatever AC they had was certainly not working.

And the humidity, because there was grass put into this, into the Pontiac silverdump, the humidity was unbearable. I mean, you could just cut it with a knife, it was so thick and it had nowhere to go. And so you had whatever, 60, 70,000 people all sweating, all giving off incredible amounts of heat, and it just would stick there. And it stuck there for the whole game. It ended up being one.

One. Our good friend Eric Winaldo scored a wonderful free kick, thankfully, and got us a point in that game. Ended up being just a really fun piece of american soccer history to be part of a few years ago. I think I've told this story before. Someone reminded me that Henry Kissinger had actually come into the locker room before we walked out, before that picture was taken.

And for those that are listening, it's just a picture of the teams walking out onto the Silver Dome field. And I had forgotten completely that Henry Kissinger, who was a real big part in getting the World cup here, had even been at the game. But my, you know, my clouds cleared and I remembered, yeah, he came around and said hello to everybody, and then we went out on the field and played and played the game. But I'm 54 years old now. I do.

It does not feel like it was 30 years ago today, but evidently it was. And a lot has changed for me, personally. A lot has changed for the sport, both on and off the field and in everything that has happened. I think, for the most part, for the good. But it was a really, really cool summer, obviously.

And we're going to celebrate a lot in 2026 when the men's World cup comes back here. But also, I'm going to pick and choose some times to celebrate this summer because we have some big days coming up, too, for the game against Columbia, which is a piece of history, the game against your Brazil in July 4 and all that kind of stuff. And then just in general, celebrating what that World cup meant to the world of soccer and what that World cup meant to the US. That was Roy Hodgson managed Switzerland. As we've discussed before, that game was the day after the OJ Bronco chase.

David Mossy
Yep. And I found out today that one of our producers, Brad Weimer, was in attendance that day. I bet he never imagined that 30 years later he and the guy that marshaled the US back line that they would be arguing about dune two. Exactly. Well, somebody at some point today, when I x'ed that out and posted that they came back with a picture of our starting lineups and there were a bunch of young girls holding up the FIFA fair play flag.

Alexi Lawless
And he said that that ended up being his future wife. He didn't know it at the time, but she was like twelve years old. He had a picture of her holding the flag up next to all of the teams. And then years later he ended up marrying her and finding out that she was one of the flag bearers in this game. So a lot of history when it comes to that game.

As I said, the Silver Dome has gone away. But the impact of that summer and the impact of that game relative to me, but also, more importantly, relative to the sport, we're still feeling it today. So happy 30th anniversary to the World Cup, 1994, and we'll continue to celebrate some different things. Anything before we go, Mossy? That's it.

David Mossy
I've said my piece on how disrespected we feel by our staff, so I'm not going to go on another rant today. I just hope at least Aaron Schechter can come out and say good job to us like she used to. She stopped doing that this summer. Don't bet on it. Don't bet on it.

Alexi Lawless
I mean, we're in like, you know, Siberia of the digital world here, you know, but there's a couple of people here. Shout out to all the people. Well, when I say all the people, the two of you, three of you that are hanging with us. All right. But shout out to everybody out there that is hanging with us each and every day when we come to you, live here and wrap up what's going on.

Couple of days. Guess what? The overlapping of the two tournaments, Copa America and euros, it's going to be just an absolute buffet of soccer. So pull up, dig in. We will have everything in terms of the previews and the reviews and everything that's going on.

As I said, live each and every day here on the state of the union. Keep downloading and subscribing and rating and doing the things that you do. Don't forget to subscribe over there on YouTube. We really, really appreciate that. We will talk to you again tomorrow.

More games tomorrow, my friends. So dig in. And until then, and as always, size the bed.
