Hello, sunshine. I'm Alexi Lawless, and welcome. Welcome to the State of the Union podcast. We look at the beautiful game on and off the field through the lens of red, white and blue colored glasses. Today's show is brought to you by Zillow agents tours loans homes get home with zillow today.
We are coming to you live here on Friday, June 14, following our first day of yet another summer of soccer here. And we kicked it off with our 2020 €4.01 game today reminder, we'll be coming to you live each and every day after the Euros and Copa America, which kicks off next week. We'll give you a wrap up of what happened during the day on and off the field and a preview of what's to come. But join me first, as always, my friend, my colleague, my guiding lights, David Mossy, a soccer savant and a fox soccer researcher in rhetoric. Straw Dan.
Here we go, my friend. How are you? I'm doing well. One down, many more to go. Yes.
One down, many more to go. This is a labor of love, but it is a labor. Got wonderful people working all day long to make us look good. Should we light this candle? Let's do it.
David Mossy
You know, we unveiled our new opening. Yeah. Let's not bury the lead, right? Okay. Big thumbs down from Judy Boyd on my dancing in that video.
She was not impressed. Yeah. I mean, it was, it was. You're not dancing, though. You not dancing, I think, is impressive.
Alexi Lawless
Okay. It was wonderful. We had a wonderful day, you know, putting that thing together again, incredible people behind the scenes that made us look good. So much fun with that, with that shaggy van that we had and all the different getups that we had. We hope that you like it.
If you're just listening to this, you missed something. So please, please check it out in the, in the visual form because you thought that David Mossey was wonderful, just in terms of the audio. Wait till you add the visual to it. It is just, it's incredible. But, yeah, you know, we, we wanted to make sure that we up everything and we're doing it with our intro so it looks, it looks good.
Now, shall we light this candle, my friend? Let's do it. Where shall we start? Is. There's only one place to start.
David Mossy
Euro 2024 is off and running. We had one match today in Munich, a very impressive start for the host nation, Germany, with a five one victory over Scotland, their biggest ever euro win. They showcased their blend of youth and experience. A pair of 21 year olds, Floridian Virt and Jamal Musiala, both found the back of the net. Tony Cruz was spraying passes around.
They flexed the depth, bringing on guys like Thomas Muller and Leroy Sanna in the second half. So a strong start for the Germans. Yes. Every goal so far at the 2020 €4 has been scored by a German, including. They were kind enough to gift Scotland a goal with Mister Rudiger over there.
Alexi Lawless
This was, as they say, comprehensive. Now, this was a german team that we certainly have talked about over the last couple of months and the last couple of years, that is in a certain transition. But if this is a german team again playing at home, and there is an incredible history of success when it comes to home, whether it's winning World Cups or at the very least, getting to semifinals of tournaments, if this is what is to come, this is good news for Ari hingst and all of her countrymen and women. In terms of this german team, there was plenty of swagger, there was plenty of confidence. They were ruthless at times.
I thought it was important what you mentioned in terms of the depth out there and on the other side, this was a horrible way to start a tournament for Scotland. I was really underwhelmed and not disgusted, but, you know, the scottish thing, and I love Stu and I love scottish fans, the tartan army and all this kind of stuff. But at what point is it actually about what happens on the field? Because I get it. You're a party, and Scotland to me is like, this is someone that you want to spend one night with, right?
Germany, on the other hand, this is someone that you want to marry. Okay, so Scotland's fun, and they have a big party and they drink and they don't take themselves too seriously. But on the field, evidently, they don't take themselves too seriously. Am I being overly critical? And is this just the way that it was always meant to be?
And they just came up against a very, very good german team, and they're just not that good when it comes to Scotland. Well, you know, they had a good qualifying campaign. They beat Spain. They have some players of note, like John McGinn, Scott McTominay, Andy Robertson, all standout players in the Premier League. So I did expect a little bit better from them.
David Mossy
It was disappointing. I don't know if you caught this, but Manuel Noor actually took a nap at one point in the first half. Yeah, I mean, he was back there probably just talking to the fans and hanging out and maybe posting online or doing whatever he was doing, but he was rarely challenged. And so Rudiger said, all right, well, I'm going to give him a little bit of action back there. And I will say that if there was going to be a goal, I think a lot of folks were talking about it coming off of a set piece from Scotland, but they had nothing.
Alexi Lawless
At one point in the second half, we were following the stats, and they had had, I think, one touch the entire game in Germany's box. I mean, again, these are the euros, and every single tournament has your teams that are going to get beaten up on. I didn't think it was going to be this bad. Jeff Sris, who's on our team and is over in Germany, came on the air saying that they're not just here to make up the numbers. Well, after that performance, it looks like they're just here to make up their numbers.
I don't think they're going to be alone in it, but it also. It doesn't take anything away from this german performance, but you're playing what we've seen so far is a horrible team, at least the version of it that has shown up this summer, and they get a red card. To be fair, I know of a supposed superpower that couldn't beat the United States earlier this week. That's true. That's true.
I mean, but those are. Those are friendlies. This is real. This is competition, Mossy. This matters.
David Mossy
And we should say Julian Naglesman made some history today. Became the youngest manager in euros history. 36 years, 327 days.
Alexi Lawless
I love him. I know that there's a bit of a savant type of thing, and I know he's a wunderkind, whatever you want to call it. But I think that he recognizes the opportunity and don't think for a second that he hasn't grown up. I don't know. For those that did watch the game, you saw that they honored Beckenbauer before the game.
You know, these incredible legends, not just on the field, but these incredible legends from a coaching perspective, because nogism is never going to equal any of them from a playing perspective, but from a coaching perspective, it's thinking about the Beckenbauers and thinking about, you know, Jurgen Klinsmann was. Was on that field. And not for nothing, but Klopp is just sitting out there right now. But for a 36 year old, he's going to be 37 here in a few weeks to come in and to be in charge of this. If he were to take this team and go deep, let alone to win it, he could establish himself even more so as the future in terms of german coaching and almost get one over on some of these contemporaries that he have, even though they're much older than him.
David Mossy
Germany hasn't won the euro since 96 and a host nation hasn't won it since France in 1984. A 40 year drought. I mean, that's good in a sense that the predictability is there or the lack of predictability is there, but that seems like a long time, huh? Yeah. All right.
Alexi Lawless
Individually, you talked about the youth and the balance is something that we've talked about when it comes to this german team and the 21 year olds coming for. I mean, the quality of goals here was awesome. And then, and Rayshawn coming on the field, even Mueller coming on the field and even though he didn't ultimately score, but your ability to bring on the fulcrugs and bring on these types of players that don't just come on, but they come on and they make an immediate impact. And yeah, players coming in a game like that are going to smell opportunity, especially attacking players, but it does, it does show that he has an embarrassment of riches and it's going to get harder. Don't, don't go.
Don't get me wrong, but there's only one game. It's a very small sample size so far, but so far, that sample size when it comes to German, this german team, pretty, pretty nice. I agree. Through all their struggles in recent years, it was never a personnel issue. The talent was always there.
David Mossy
I know they're your pick to win this tournament, and they certainly look capable of it today. As you mentioned, two goals from subs, Emery Chan and Nicholas full crook. So they have some depth. They're in a group where I think Naglesman is going to be able to rotate in these three games and get everybody in there, everybody in the mix. And so strong start for sure.
Alexi Lawless
I mentioned Ari hingst and, you know, we'll probably tell this story, or she'll probably tell this story. Cause I just think it's, it's. It's so powerful about what 20, what 2006 meant for that country. And we know even though they didn't win it, it's almost as if they won it. And she even tells the story about how there was an apathy or even just a embarrassment or even just a lack of pride in the country that was completely flipped around.
And again, just one game. But to see that crowd and to see that country now that is going to go to sleep tonight thinking, hey, this is something that we can grab onto. It's pretty cool. And we're going to have Ari on at some point and she'll tell that story because it's just. It's really powerful to see how the game can change things, but how a home team doing well can change the perception from the outside, but more importantly, even the perception from the inside.
David Mossy
Absolutely. What would you like to go to now? Because we want to make sure that we preview what's coming up, when we got. We got a whole lot coming up, including these weekend games. So three more games on tap tomorrow, including the other two teams.
In Group A, Hungary will battle Switzerland. I mentioned previous thing in the pod. Switzerland has reached the knockout stage in their last five major tournaments. They have a knack for getting out of these groups hungry. Very good.
They've got a player I love in Sobos. Sly had a strong qualifying campaign, so that's an intriguing game as well. Times on those. Just so everybody knows, if you're listening here in the United States and watching here in the United States, what do we got? 912 and three.
Alexi Lawless
Does that sound right? Eastern Standard Time. Correct. Yes. And Hungary, Switzerland, we should say, is on Fubo.
David Mossy
And then the other two games I'm going to mention are on Fox. Then you move on to Group B. You've got one of the best group state matches of the tournament. Spain against Croatia. That's at the Olympiastadian in Berlin, a venue that I love, which hosted the 2006 World cup final between Italy and France.
The Zidane headbutt. And then the defending champions. Speaking of them, Italy will begin against Albania. That's at BVB stadion in Dortmund. We know Giorgio Celini is fired up for it.
Italy looking to become just the second nation to win back to back euros, something that only Spain has accomplished 2000. 820. Twelve. All right, so Hungary, Switzerland. I'm thinking we see our first draw.
Alexi Lawless
Okay. Tie, whatever you call it, whatever you want to call it. But that's what I'm predicting there. Spain, Croatia. I think Spain beats Croatia and Italy, to Giorgio's delight, has no problem going over Albania.
What do you got? Let me just say, I agree with you on Hungary, Switzerland. On Spain, Croatia. We know this could be a midfield orgy with guys like Rodri and Modric. However, I've read a lot of articles in the spanish media about how this is a different spanish team.
David Mossy
With the emergence of these two wingers, Lamin Yamal, Nico Williams, it might be a little less of the tiki taka stuff, a little bit more vertical playing through those guys. So interesting. After all these years of Spain having that identity. Could this be the tournament where finally, they try a different approach and see how. Well, we'll talk a little bit more about Yamal in a second here.
Alexi Lawless
But as it relates to Spain, sometimes it's hard to live up to what Spain was. I mean, they fundamentally changed the way that we think about playing the game with that, with that incredible run and that incredible success. And let's be honest, they had the players to do it. And while they have at times tried to replicate that, I think that this spanish team I have way up in my power rankings, I'm very, very high on them. But if the success and whatever success they have is maybe, to your point, going to come in a very different way and not look like what we have kind of put up on a pedestal when it comes to what Spain is.
Do you. So how do you have in terms of the result between Spain and Croatia? I like Spain to win that match. You like Spain, but a close one. Any blowout type of scenarios?
Because now we have Italy Albania as that third game. No, I don't think Italy Albania is. More frisky than what Scotland was today, right? Yes. They've got a brazilian manager, Sylvia, so I'll be pulling for them.
David Mossy
You know, like half their squad plays in Italy, so they're not going to be intimidated, including guys like Aslani, who. Very good player, Inter Milan. So, you know, Giorgio Cellini said on the air today that Italy, they're not going to look past Albania because they've. They play against a lot of these guys at club level. They know how good they are.
So it's actually a tricky opener for. The Italians, but we're also going to see for the first time, you know, the Italy. And will the real Italy please stand up? Is it the one that we see in the World cup or we don't see in the World Cups at all? Or is it this one that's obviously defending champions of Euros?
Carlo Ancelotti gave an interview right before this tournament to an italian newspaper and he said Italy's only world class players, Donnarum and goal. He doesn't see a single outfield player in the squad that he would classify as a world class star. Ouch. All right, well, maybe it's some of their parts going forward. We got that to look forward to tomorrow and we'll be giving it to you, like I said, bright and early.
Alexi Lawless
So wake up. Whether you get some coffee or not, hang out with us for all of these games. Should we talk a little bit more big picture as to what's happening? And again, I remind people that, yes, Euro started today. Copa America starts next week.
At which point we will be bringing all of those games to you live. So simultaneous tournaments happening when it comes to Fox, it's going to be fun. Where should we go to now? Mazda. They want us to identify our favorite group.
David Mossy
Stage matchup of both tournaments, the euro and the Copa America. Our favorite matchups. I am intrigued by Portugal, and not just because it's Cristiano Ronaldo's potential last dance. Okay, so the Portugal. Turkey.
Alexi Lawless
Right. Let me make sure we get this right out there. I am intrigued by that game because of what Portugal can be, because of the dynamic of Ronaldo and what he is and what Roberto Martinez, the coach, is going to do. And because I think that Turkey is sneaky. Not sneaky good.
They're just good. Not necessarily great. And in a certain way, they are going to be a home team, given all of the turkish support that is going to be on display in the stadium there. And they are going to have plenty of people cheering for them. So I'm looking forward to that on the euro side.
I'll go to cope in a sec. No, that's a great pick. I'm going to go a bit more chalk to obvious matchups. Spain, Italy, so much history there at major tournaments. They've squared off in the knockout stage of the last €4, including the 2012 final.
David Mossy
And you can also go all the way back to the 1994 World cup. Remember that quarter final? Foxborough. Mauro Tasati elbowing Luis Enrique. So that's one.
And then France. Netherlands is the other in Group D. I can't wait for such a great game. Mbappe going up against Virgil van Dyke and company. Okay.
Alexi Lawless
And the other side, I think I'm looking forward to Brazil, Colombia. Because Colombia on the ascent. Brazil, at least according to David Mossey, not the Brazil of before. So, you know, how does it play out in a tournament setting? What we have seen play out at times when it comes to World cup.
David Mossy
Qualifying, based on the laws of syllogism from this week, Colombia should win that game by four goals. Right, exactly. Syllogism. If you had that on your bingo card. Check it off going forward.
Alexi Lawless
Where to now, Mossy? Next up, we have some. Oh, wait, let's do some rising stars potential. Euro and Copa. No, no, I'm sorry.
David Mossy
Next topic is knockout round matchup that we're always hoping to see. Okay. It's hard when it comes to the euros because of the third place finishes. And you're a much smarter guy than me. You might have some permutations when it comes to what potentially, potentially could happen.
Alexi Lawless
So I'm going to go the knockout scenario from a Copa perspective, I don't think there's anywhere to go but the US. And we'll talk a little bit more about the US here. But ultimately, this is about beating big teams in big moments, and it's going to happen. If and when the US gets out of their group, they're going to get out of their group. They are going to face a team that the rest of the world thinks they are better on, and even that we would probably think that they are better then.
And thats where the rubber meets the road. Thats where they have to perform. And so for me, that is the knockout route game that I am looking forward to as it relates to Greg Berhalter, the head coach and to this team as to whether they can do it. Because the reality is, if everything goes as the soccer gods would write it up, theyre either playing Colombia or theyre playing Brazil. For the euros, when we did our brackets, I picked the final of Germany, England.
David Mossy
I would absolutely love to see that come to fruition if we get that game. I mean, talk about incredible history at major tournaments. I don't know if you're aware of this because the English don't talk about it that much, but they actually won the 1966 World cup, beating West Germany in the finals. So imagine if 58 years later, they were able to bring it home again by beating Germany in Germany in the final of a major tournament. Oh, my goodness.
Alexi Lawless
I mean, you know, they talk about it coming home, and it may or may not be coming home, but if it comes home, can you imagine how insufferable the English would be? It would be, it would be fun to see, just to kind of see the, the drama of it. But, man, oh, man, we would not hear the end of it. And then on the Copa front, I think the dream final in every Copa America is Argentina. Brazil.
David Mossy
As we sit here today, I wouldn't feel very confident about that matchup if it was tomorrow. But if Brazil do get to the final, they're in the much tougher side of the bracket. It will have meant they've gone through some pretty good teams. So maybe some of the question marks I have will have been answered by then, and I'll feel better about a matchup with Argentina. Everybody has their own dreams, okay?
Alexi Lawless
So why is it a dream final? Brazil and Argentina? Why wouldn't Argentina versus the United States be a dream final? Because contrary to your ludicrous assertions, Brazil. Argentina is the greatest rivalry in international football, without question.
Oh, stop. Oh, stop. This is the first show. Can you pace yourself a little bit? It.
My goodness. Let's now talk about some younger players. Where do you want to start here? Yeah, so we have some rising stars in both tournaments. We already talked about a couple today for Germany and Wirts and Ociala, but there are plenty more we're going to see in the coming days.
David Mossy
I also mentioned La Mina mal when talking about Spain. So you tell me if you had to pick out one from each tournament that you're most looking forward to. I mean, look, if you have a 16 year old who's not just playing but. But potentially starting, that's pretty awesome. So Lamina Mal, I think, absolutely is a star for his ability.
Alexi Lawless
Yes, but is a star for the unique reality that he's 16 years old. So I'm excited for that. You mentioned the german young players from a brazilian perspective, even the game the other day against the US, he came out in the second half. Endric, 17 years old. And from an England perspective, Kobe.
Mino. Minu. Right. Is that how I'm pronouncing it? Maynow.
David Mossy
Yep. Maynow. 18 years old. So those are. Those are three possibilities.
Alexi Lawless
But look, a 16 year old walks on the field in a. In a euro situation. All eyes are going to be on that, as they should. La Mina mal, I agree, is a very good choice. I'm going to go in the euros with Arda Guler from Turkey.
David Mossy
I was enamored of what I saw from him late in the season for Real Madrid. Everybody talks about how stacked Real Madrid is with Mbappe and Bellingham, Vinicius, Rodrigo Enrich arriving and they forget to include this kid who's phenomenal. He scored some amazing goals for Real Madrid late in the season. I think he's going to be one of Turkier's big stars and we've talked about it. We could see Terkier going far with the crowd support they're going to have.
So I'll go with Ardegolaire at the euros and then for the Copa, I'm going to go with Kendry Paez. I've been banging this drum a lot the last few weeks. Ecuadorian teenager is going to be joining Chelsea when he turns 18. I'm a massive fan of his. I've watched him a lot in the Copa Libertadores group stage this year.
He is an amazing, amazing talent. So I can't wait to watch him play for Ecuador in this Copa America. Ok, well, speaking of Copa America. The Copa America roster for the United States men's national team just dropped. Not a lot of surprises here.
Alexi Lawless
Timmy Tillman cut. Let's see. Shaq Moore remains and I think the one big interesting, it's not a head scratcher, but it is a surprise given the fact that he has been injured. Is Josh Sargent continues on into Copa America? We don't know yet because he has not played in either of these friendlies.
I hope that this is an indication that they feel that he is going to be available and is going to be useful. I don't know necessarily in a starting capacity. And it's really kind of a shame because we have yet to see him be 100% healthy and challenged for that spot, which is something that I think he can do. But I don't know what version of Josh Sargent we're going to get for Copa America, but obviously Greg Berhalter feels that it's enough to keep him on the roster. Yeah.
David Mossy
Timothy Tillman drops out in the last couple of weeks. We heard the possibility of Miles Robinson going to the Olympic team as an overage player, and obviously the possibility of sergeant being cut due to injury. So that's where I was thinking that that one cut might come from. But both those players remain. So to your point, there's five center backs on this roster, which does raise the possibility of playing in a back three at some point in this Copa America, if Greg Berhalter so desires.
And also you have three center forwards, plus Hadji Wright, who we know can play there. So it's interesting the depth at those two spots. I mean, the forwards right now that are listed are Brendan Aronson, Flo Baligan, Ricardo Pepe, Christian Pulisic, Josh Sargent, Tim weah, and like you said, haji Wright. So this is it. Dance with the ones that brung you.
Alexi Lawless
And this is what's happening when it comes to Copa America. So if the US is to play Argentina in the final, these are the men that are going to have to take us there. All right, listen, let's wrap it up here for one, for the road. Before I talk a little bit about the dynamic when it came to this new cast of characters that we have that you will be meeting here over the next month. How did it go behind the scenes?
Mossy over in the control room on the first day? Because sometimes it can be chaotic and we got a lot of stuff going on, a lot of technology and new type of technology that we were using. How was it for you? It was great. It was chaotic, but I think we did pretty well for a first day.
David Mossy
Love working with Jules breach. I think we already have pretty good chemistry. I scripted the show today, and she went in there and made some changes of her own, which all made sense. So we're on the same page. So, so far, so good on that front.
Alexi Lawless
Yeah. I've said it before about David Mossey and how good he is, and he will very, very quickly pick up nuances and pick up your voice when he is writing for you. And some of it's just kind of cultural types of thing, but there's a whole lot of nuance that comes. And so she is lucky again to have you as we, as we all are going forward. I did write for Kate Abdo for many years, so the british female voice, I have some experience with that, so I was able to apply that with Jules.
Nobody has a better grasp of female brits than David Mossy. Okay, listen. The dynamic in terms of the talent in front of the camera, I thought it was great. And it's the first day. We had a couple of rehearsals over the last couple of days, but you mentioned Giorgio Cellini and Daniel Sturridge and Peter Schmeichel, who I thought was really, really good and interesting on the desk.
And we're going to get more and more time and more and more reps going forward. Myself and Stu Holden were involved, Ari hingst were involved. And we have multiple sets. And for those that did tune in, what you will see and what you will continue to see throughout the summer is this incredibly complex but interesting set that we have here in Los Angeles, which is where we are broadcasting for both of the tournaments. And, you know, we've called it a palace.
I liken it to almost a cathedral in what we have. It gives us the ability to put all of our talent in different places, and it gives us the ability to highlight these different countries that are hosting these tournaments. And while that's all a bunch of bells and whistles and lights and all that kind of stuff, and that's all fine and, well, it's just there to add to what hopefully is the most important part, which is the analysis and the entertainment that we are giving. I think we're off to a good start. And the relationships will start to form, both the relationships behind the scenes, but also they will manifest at times on air.
And this is like any type of family. You grow together. At times, you have good times. At times you have bad times, you work through it. But I'm really impressed so far with the professionalism and the support and already a kind of comradery and friendship that is forming between everybody.
And as I said, we got a lot of soccer to do and we have some of that family that isn't even here yet that starts to show up over the next couple of days with the likes of Clint Dempsey and Carly Lloyd. And the list goes on and on and on. And Rob Stone and those, those folks. I want to commend you, my friend, because you had a smaller role today. We wanted to showcase our new stars.
David Mossy
We brought in some Euro winners like Peter Schmeichel and Giorgio Cellini. You could have sulked, but instead you made the most of your time on the pre game show. You brought it, my friend, for your five minutes there that you listen. Quality over quantity. Look, it's.
Alexi Lawless
I love what I do. And whether it's for hours or for minutes, it really doesn't, it doesn't matter. I am incredibly fortunate and lucky to be able to do what I do. That I can come here later and hang with all of you guys, including you, my friend, and everybody else here that's tuning in. Like I said, I am one of the luckiest men alive.
And I do not take it for granted by any stretch of the imagination. And I will go home and I will get ready again and we'll do it all again tomorrow. A couple of notes on our team here on the pod. Oh, boy. Here we go.
David Mossy
First, the good news. Did you see Kiara is back with us? I did. You know, just when they think, you know, you're out, we'll bring you back in. Very exciting.
The bad, though. Did you see how cocky Sean Sullivan was when he strutted in here? You know, he is not producing our pod. He's doing the now show, which he views as the more prestigious role. So he's relegated Kiara, I'm sorry, Kyla, to producing this pod.
And what's interesting about Sean is he just assumes his job will be waiting for him when he gets back at the end of the summer. Mossy, you years and years ago, talked to me about Wally Pip and the phenomenon of Wally Pip, you know, and you know, Sean. Wonderful. And we love what he does. But, you know, times change and you start taking it for granted and somebody can come in and I think anybody that has watched the show out there for any length of time will already recognize that we have taken it to a whole other level.

Coincidence? I think not. It's all about the talent that's behind the camera, believe me. But this is the talent that you're getting in front of the camera, and you will get this talent for the next month or so. And we can't wait to bring it to you each and every day.
As we said, we are going to be bringing this to you live. You can find it on all the different platforms out there, and it's there, not in the full form that you normally get when it comes to the state of the union. Nice little bite sized types of pods that each and every day, whether you're listening live or whether you're listening later, will give you a synopsis of what happened. Because there's a lot of stuff that goes on. I like to think that everybody is out there pulling up to the buffet and eating as much soccer as they possibly can.
But I get it. Sometimes you're just nibbling. That's why we are here. David Mosse and myself, we will be here to give you what you need. So when you are out there in public and you're hanging out with your friends, you know what to talk about because you have an idea of what happened.
You know that 221 year olds scored today. You have an understanding that Germany brought it today. And tomorrow there will be more games. So we appreciate everybody hanging out. We will talk to you again tomorrow as we continue on with his incredible euros.
Keep downloading and subscribing and raiding and doing all the different things that you do. Thanks, by the way, to zillow. Such wonderful, wonderful partners, and they will continue to be so as we go through these next few weeks. It's been wonderful. We will talk to you again tomorrow.
And until then, and as always, my friends, size the day.
